Gotcha! is a small utility for OS/2 which allows to easily capture windows, window interiors, parts of the screen or the whole desktop and save them to disk or clipboard as a picture (in several file formats if OS/2 Multimedia is installed; otherwise only BMP format). (2) Installation:
This file is small so the install is very quick. Once done you have a folder on your desktop with two text files (Copying and Readme) and the program it's self.
(3) Start up: There are four main options for screen capture: Screen, Screen Region, Window, and Window Interior. Two ways to save the image: Clipboard and File. Two Options: Hide Gotcha! And Delay Capt Interestingly, there is no menu bar to talk about. No file, edit, view, etc at the top bar. While this program is very useful, it is very bare bones. (4) The Program: As I played with Gotcha! I appreciated the straightforwardness of it. It's simple for anyone to pickup and just take pictures of your screen. You can master it in 5 minutes. While this is good, it's also frustrating to see some programs out there that can do so much more such as using the mouse to circle a part of the screen that is important and then capturing the screen or even using colors to highlight content to bring focus on something interesting. The most major annoyance though is that you cannot choose what format to save your capture in. It is always a .bmp file. They are rather large in size no matter what size of the screen you take. Luckily, you can left click on the file and in eCS 2.0, simply choose a new format. I always save to a .jpg, much smaller. (5) Final Thoughts: This is my very first review of well, anything. So I wanted something small and easily digestible for me and the reader as I try and design an easy format. I hope it worked for you. Even though it might sound like I'm not crazy for Gotcha!, it is the best screen capture program we have. I do not think it will have another update so I am hoping someone else comes up with a native program to take it's place. Until then, Gotcha! Is in WarpIn format so it's easy to install, a small foot print, and very easy to use. Because of eCS 2.0 ability to convert a .bmp into a .jpg on the fly the issue of converting a file is mute. Gotcha! Should be a staple of software you have on your computer. If you don't have it, scroll up to the top of the page and get it. (6) Updates after the review: None as of yet. |
